Latin Club (President), Science Olympiad, Recycling Team, Track & Field team, Cross Country team, Section Editor for

Prior to setting out on his own Eagle Scout project where he designed and lead the construction of two grills at
Intown Community Church, he assisted with eight other projects. Michael also founded and lead a young men's weekly
discipleship group and served on the leadership team for his church youth group. He enjoyed his service requirements
with Beta Club and National Honor Society, going above and beyond the usual involvement with the activities and job
assignments.
Michael looks forward to his future at Georgia Institute of Technology and the Lakeside Foundation is pleased to have presented him with $1,000 to be used towards his expenses.
The Arts Scholarship ~ Khari R. Joyner
Khari began his music career at the age of eight, studying with Suzuki teacher
Bonnie Bull and renowned cellist Martha Gerschefski. He has been a member of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra
(Principal Cellist - 2007-2008) and Lakeside High School Orchestra (Principal Cellist - 2006-2008), the Metropolitan
Youth Concert Orchestra and the Georgia All-State Orchestra. Khari's dedication to his art has been recognized
through the many awards and honors he has received. In his senior year he competed in the national competition
(Sphinx Competition), coming in first place in the Junior division. He has also been recognized by receiving the
Hank Aaron Chasing a Dream award, as well as The Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award. As a result of receiving
this award he will be performing this June on the PBS show "From the Top", which will be aired on PBS and WABE.
Most students would have spent their summers taking a break from school and their music, but not Khari.
He continued to enrich his art by attending summer study institutions from Bloomington, Indiana to Wolfeboro,
New Hampshire, giving him the opportunity to not only study with world-renowned musicians, but also to broaden
his communication skills by participating in Communication Outreach Courses. Khari has credited these courses
with giving him the ability to become a more expressive and candid performer. At Lakeside Khari was an active
member of Beta Club and National Honor Society and believes that his music taught him the discipline necessary
to develop great study habits.
Spending his senior year competing at various music competitions, Khari was well on his way to accomplishing
his goal to become a concert cellist and perform all around the world. Having been accepted to the New England
Conservatory, Peabody Conservatory, Southern Methodist University, and Johns Hopkins School, Khari has accepted
the opportunity to study at Julliard in New York City. The Lakeside Foundation is honored to present Khari
with $1,000 to use towards his expenses.
