Summer 2008 - LHS Weight Room
After the initial meeting with Lakeside administration, the Foundation set a goal to
raise $20,000 to purchase new weight room equipment for the use of the students and faculty at Lakeside.
We are proud to announce the final order of weight room equipment arrived in February, 2008.
So many have worked towards making this project a success and we would like to acknowledge as many as we can - but please, if you worked on the project and your name is not mentioned please let us know, we will be more than
glad to add you to our lists to thank!
Before any new equipment was ordered a large group of parent volunteers, lead by Tom Branch and the PTSA Building & Grounds committee, spent hours in the weight room cleaning and painting the room!
The first order of weight room equipment purchased by the Foundation was delivered in November 2007, followed closely
by the LHS PTSA order of an additional $2,500 in equipment. This was followed by the final order of $9,300 in equipment.
To our donors and the Lakeside community, the Foundation extends their appreciation for your support. Without you this
project could not have been successful.

November 2007 - LHS Alumni Directory, a New Viking Tradition
During the spring and through-out this past summer, Lakeside alumni received postcards asking them to provide their updated contact information. The Foundation contracted with Harris Connect, a national publishing company, to contact the 10,000 plus graduates of LHS. With the final product being the first LHS Alumni Directory.
The Alumni Committee took on the task of compiling history, records and traditions over the past 40 years at LHS, as well as, trying to track down any contact records that were available to create a starting point for Harris Connect.
Believe it or not, with the help of many alumni, the committee found a copy of all but 5 of the Norse Code's published since 1965. These, along with reunion directories, gave Harris Connect a starting point and an idea of how many students we have had walk the halls of Lakeside.
We are looking forward to the delivery of the first ever Lakeside Alumni Directory this fall. In the event you did not respond to the notices, contact us and we will make sure your information is updated for the next issue. |

September 2007 - LHS Weight Room Gets a Lift
Remember Coach Wayman Creel? Can you believe Lakeside still has the very same equipment that was built by Coach Creel in the 70's?! It's time for a new weight room and the Lakeside Foundation has accepted the challenge to sponsor this project. It is our plan to partner with booster clubs, the PTSA, and local businesses to replace all of the antiquated equipment.
With the new focus on physical education, the curriculum course offerings of Weight Training and Physical Fitness, and the conditioning requirements for our athletic teams, we think this is a priority. After meeting with the administration, Athletic Director and County School System representatives, our committee is hard at work raising funds for this project.
If you have suggestions or would like to help with this project, please email the Foundation. |

May 2007 - Lakeside Staff Presented with Service Pins
The Foundation Board knew it wanted to immediately develop a program recognizing the staff and faculty at Lakeside. After receiving many comments and suggestions from community members, we knew it was a priority for others as well. |
Working with Balfour representative, Howard Smith, a replica of a senior ring was designed as a lapel pin and engraved with the years of service to Lakeside; 5 years, 10 years, 20 years and 30 years.
During the May 2007 Post-Planning meeting, the Foundation was proud to present the “Years of Service Pins” to the employees of Lakeside High School. Recipients of the 20 and 30 year pins received a standing ovation.
At the conclusion of the presentations, Foundation Board Member Sammie Calder stated to the staff, “We hope you take with you today the knowledge that you are appreciated and the years you have dedicated to Lakeside have not gone unnoticed. We hope you will wear these pins with the same honor and pride as they are given.” The Foundation is dedicated to continuing this program and invite you to become a part of it.
Please let the Foundation know if you have any suggestions or would like to help with the 2008 presentations. |

| May 2007 - Scholarships Awarded to Excellent Students
The decision to fund three scholarships came easy for the Foundation. We knew the three key area’s were Academics/Community Service, the Arts, and Athletics and decided to fund all three rather than try to narrow down or combine categories. The Scholarship Committee was thrilled with the number of applicants and very impressed with all of their achievements and accomplishments while at LHS. Winners were announced in the 2007 Graduation Ceremony Program. The recipients were each awarded a check for $1,000 and an engraved commemorative bowl.

| April 2007 - Billy McHenry,‘82, Honors Parents
Looking for a way to honor his parents and the years of dedication to Lakeside, Mr. McHenry contacted the principal at LHS for suggestions. He was given the news about the Foundation and that it would be a great place to start his search. In his conversation with members of the board, he shared that he wanted to find a way to honor his parents and their dedication to Lakeside. Both of his parents were active in the PTA, booster clubs and other volunteer activities. He remembered how his mother loved being a part of the Miss Lakeside Pageant and looked forward to working with the girls every year.
|
When told about the Scholarship program he said he knew that was exactly what his parents would have loved. The Foundation was pleased to accept Billy’s donation of $1,000 for the 2007 Foundation Scholarship Fund, and his pledge to provide the same amount for four more years. He gave permission to the Foundation to share his donation and pledge to the Lakeside community, and especially other alumni, in hopes that others would follow him in this effort.

| November 2006 - Chuck Smith/ReMax Metro Atlanta Gives From the Heart |

|
Chuck Smith, ReMax Metro Atlanta real estate broker, presented the Foundation with it's first corporate donation of $5,000. In a speech to Foundation supporters, Smith urged others to match his contribution to the Foundation "I am grateful to be able to support such a great school." Smith said.
When first contacted about the prospects of a foundation to support Lakeside High School, area real estate professionals widely supported the effort. Smith shared with Foundation President Tara Stamps his belief that to keep our high school strong, and property values high, it is an excellent idea for businesses and community leaders to support The Foundation.
|
In a show of support for the Foundation, a large group representing ReMax Metro Atlanta attended the Foundation Kick-Off Dinner. Brenda Beadles, one of the real estate agents said, "I am happy to contribute to such a worthwhile organization and I look forward to seeing great things from them in the future."
Tara Stamps challenged other area businesses to match Mr. Smith's dedication and support of the Foundation saying "the success of our Lakeside Foundation greatly depends on our community leaders and supportive alumni. We can't do it without them. If we all get behind improving Lakeside then the sky is the limit on what we can accomplish together."
